Vivien Johnston BA (Hons), FRSA

An expert in responsible sourcing of precious metals, diamonds, and gems. With over 20 years of experience in the jewellery industry, Vivien identifies the potential for businesses to create positive impacts for mining communities and recognises opportunities for governments to consider precious natural resources as peace assets and development tools.  She is solution-focused, motivated by innovation, creativity, and the art- of- the- possible.

Vivien is firmly rooted in the belief that education is the key to unlocking development goals in the jewellery industry and promotes accessible and comprehensive learning methods.
In particular, she enables Women’s Empowerment, inclusion and diversity in the Jewellery Supply Chain. She also works on-brand design, strategy, and identity, with a particular interest in ‘horizon scanning’ for emergent and future consumer trends.

Experienced as a practitioner, she gained an honors degree in Silversmithing and Jewellery from the prestigious Glasgow School of Art and is former Head of Design for a commercial jewellery design brand. With an extensive and influential network, she has first-hand experience of the ethical luxe consumer market, having founded her own brand in 2006 to pilot a responsible business model promoting positive ethics in mining and jewellery, using materials exclusively from traceable sources. Vivien was Chairman of the Jewellery Ethics Committee UK and Ireland (2011-2015) and Ethics Manager for the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A). She is a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. She has received De Beers Group Institute certification (Diamond Foundation course) , Gubelin Academy Professional Coloured Gem Diploma in Emeralds and the International Gem Society certification as an Emerald specialist.

Since 2011, Vivien has consulted for a range of clients including major luxury Jewellery Maisons, high street brands, junior mining companies, international brand agencies, NGO’s and natural resource governance advisors. International assignments include USA, China, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Mongolia and continental Europe.

She has particular and niche expertise in working with ASM and junior mining companies, start-up brands, and SME’s, where ‘joining the dots’ in supply chains presents unique and complex challenges which she is especially adept at managing. In 2021, Vivien launched her own boutique consultancy, Johnston Resources.
